WD.issue4.Pg17.Pn2and3Szekeres by Jozef-Szekeres WD.issue4.Pg17.Pn2and3Szekeres by Jozef-Szekeres
Originally painted in 1994, This was interior artwork for the forth issue Pg17, panels 2 & 3 for the Original WaveDancers comic series. The art features Raenafel rising from the water, the first time our characters Barmek and Sleia see her. The 3rd panel was a popular image of Raenafel with lots of fan mail focussing on it, but I guess there was a build up of 3 issues beforehand to see who this "lost Crown" really was, that Winnowill could be mistaken for. I've even seen this image as a tattoo, which was the highest of compliments.

Wendy sent me dyes to paint with, but probably due to my lack of experience with using them, I really did not like working with them, so they were relegated to background washes and such as in these panels. The figure work was done in the acrylics that I was only still just learning, but felt more comfortable with.

I loved doing it, and yes this character I think is very switched on to her sexuality, and I love letting that permeate through her actions.

One of my favorite images from the single issue I own (and I feel so lucky to have it). I actually love the first panel in particular . . . her pose, her expression of happiness, the movement to it, are all excellent. The dramatic lighting is lovely as well.

Thank you.

It's great to hear you have a copy of this comic. They are now hard to find.

I felt like I was animating Raenafel as she was exiting/raising from the water. I used all the knowledge I had about animated movement from my Disney days on this comic. Raenafel was a favortie character of mine, so she was always given that little extra time by me.

The right image was the first WaveDancers image I ever saw, even though I had no idea what/who it was back then. Back then I thought it was some weird fanart of winnowill, because there were no credits listen. Then I somehow found blackmermaid and saw the other drawing of Rae in the profiles and I was like.... HOLY FLIP! And then I saw Tilaweed. And then I saw ShoreSprout. And then I fell in love with WaveDancers XD

I like the idea that you thought Raenafel was "some weird fanart of Winnowill". In a way, I wanted there to be a second take on Raenafel, so the Winnowill/Raenafel switch could work well enough in the story.

I was a silly 16 year old back then XP I had no brains. Still don't have them, but can at least pretend I have them now ^_^. But if you only see that image, with no context whatsoever, it looks like a younger version of winno XD

Thanks, I like that. A younger version of Winni, when she was sweet and innocent... But now with age and experience we now know it to be Raenafel, and that's even better. :-)

To me this was always the most beautiful scene from WD. I feel in love with this the first time I saw it.

She is gorgeous and absolutely stunning. I can't wait to see more of your art it inspires beyond words :)

Thank you. There was something special about this scene with Raenafel, I felt it as I was drawing it. I guess also, she was one of my favorite characters and here I was finally able to show her off after such a build up.

Indeed...she sort of...slithers out fo the water...but not in a bad way! lol I love the whole idea of Winnowill having an opposite out there...this is really terrific Jozef. I'm so glad you are posting some of your older pieces...it's so great to see that even as staggeringly talented as you are, even YOu have grown and changed as an artist(which is, of ourse, the only way to go! An artist that doesn't change risks getting stale...or worse...tired of art!).

Thank you. The readers at the time liked the softness of Raenafel against the hardness of Winnowill.

I'm still learning my art skills, somedays with better focus then others, but it's a constant discovery. You are right about keeping artistically fresh.

Apart from maybe 3 or so works, including the Unknown Seas artwork of the mermaid I've posted on this site, my real experience with painting was started when I took on the painting chores for the WaveDancers series. Initially we looked to find a painter to color my pencils, but after getting no real quality response, I decided to take the plunge and do it myself, for I though I was petrified, I though what I could do would be better then the quality of the samples we saw. Richard to his credit allowed me to to go ahead, but I needed to prove myself not only to him, but to myself, and I did that by producing the WaveDancers Centerfold and covers 2 and 3 as the very first painted artwork for the OWD to convince him of my budding skills.

 wow. Honest to God, you amaze me. I was fresh out of college by the time WD was published and working at a children's books company and although my watercolors were good, I always would sneak a peek or two to the WD pages as inspiration idea for color matches and shading. Well sir! you are inspiring and your skills just keep honing themselves!

Wow, that's a wonderful compliment. I was doing the same, checking other artists work that I admire to understand how they do color. I still do it.
