Description

Originally painted in 1994, This was interior artwork for the forth issue Pg1 for the Original WaveDancers comic series. The art features the birth of Raenafel with her mother Ailsa, her father Brom, and Kirith as the midwife, and No-wing as "witness".

Elfin birth in EQ was meant to be presented as an easy thing, especially one born of recognition. This birth however had complications and Ailsa passes during this birthing, and as is their WaveDancer tradition for their dead, left for the sharks that are drawn to her by her blood.

The painting of the black hair was a little revelation to me, as it became freer to work with then the outlined animation shapes of the other colored hair styles in the series. I eventually went on to understand that I could have that freedom with all hair, no matter the color base. I then used this newfound technique on the white hair of Ailsa, and wished that I had other white blond characters other then Ailsa that I could do this type of hair on. But the cast at that stage was set.

It was early painting days in '93-'94.

Your Brom was a very creative character, combining the old Neptune image with the long beard and the usual beardless elves. In EQ only the Wolfriders sprout face fur due to the wolf heritage and Two Edge due to his troll heritage.

A beardless Brom would not have worked and it is a loss the character got so little screentime.
