Jasmine
King Of Thieves
Animation By Jozef Szekeres

Here we have Jasmine from the 3rd Aladdin film (2nd straight to video/DVD), wherein I did animation mostly on Jasmine and sometimes on Aladdin, as often they were together in this film (in that lovey-dovey sort of way). As a big romantic, I was often cast to animate those special moments between the leading characters, and when Jasmine was to be especially pretty, or to show emotion. Apparently I was known for animating the leading ladies "Disney pretty" and with emotions behind their eyes. I of course enjoyed that connection, because it allowed me to do more and more of that sort of character and animation.... which I enjoyed.

Princess Jasmine looks like she's been drawn in a Dylandra Piquel-ish way. You've done wonders working at the Disney Australian studio, my friend. :)

Well..., I did work on Dylandra and created model sheets and a animator reference maquette for her as well. However, I feel Jasmine is very different in all the details, and certainly more exotic then Dylandra. There is that Disney "house-style" that would permeate all the Disney leading ladies.

Here's one of my Dylandra images captured by Disney wiki:

Ah, I see. But, what does "house-style" mean?

There's a particular "Disney" look, or was, when I was animating for them. Even though each film has it's own stylisations, there also seems to be a "Disney-look" that brings all of them together. "That" is the house style.

Oh, okay. Thanks.

Besides, what was your favorite episode of "Bonkers" that you've worked on? :)

I've not really seen them since seeing the rushes.

Below is my IMDB listings that list the 7 episode I did. No real favourite.

You worked as a Disney animator! I have great respect as Disney characters are my favorite, if not challenging, to draw. And Jasmine here has never looked more beautiful. Tell me, what is your process for both animation and drawing for animation?

Aww thank you. I always wanted to show Jasmine as beautifully as I could, as she's a beautifully designed character. As an animator, it's not just getting the character to look right, but to get emotions to come through their faces and body. When working at Disney, I was known for making the princesses Disney beautiful, BUT with emotion behind their eyes.

I'd say, get into the emotion of the character that the character is feeling, as you're drawing them. One way that helps me do this is to listen to music that reflects the emotion of the moment. Also have a mirror and ape your own facial expressions in these emotions, and you'll get the best reference... yourself.

Actually, I recognize some of these poses from Return of Jafar -- bottom right and most of the middle, specifically.

I worked on that film too.

I've filed all my Aladdin/Jasmine stuff together, rather then by film.

sorry but sad to say, the characters are totally off model in some of the scenes in return of jafar...i'm not saying u but apparently some animators are not doing their best. Those characters are suppose to look like themselves...i remember an animator who used to worked on little mermaid 2 said that most of the characters animation were done in Disney studio in China, i guess thats why...=((

The sequel films were shared sometimes over 3 different studios to be completed quickly.

The majority of the underwater scenes from THM2, including the shared song of Ariel and Melody was done in China. Unfortunately the animation is very stiff, and there is even a scene where Ariel's neck grow in inches at a rapid rate. Frightening stuff. The studios for this film were so paranoid that Ariel's hair would be unruly and too floaty, made everyone give her a helmut for a hairstyle.

I tried to make her as close to the feature as was allowed, and also got as many underwater scenes as I could but that wasn't many. I had better luck with Melody, as it was really a film about Melody with Ariel as a background character.

I actually can't watch the film. It hurts my eyes. Especially when the China sections come up.

Return of Jafar was also a sequel split between studios. I'm proud of the animation I did, but the whole film lacks a strong story. I do however love the song sung between Aladdin and Jasmine. The singing voice of Jasmine is my favourite.

haha thanks for replying, and thanks for sharing ur thoughts on those sequels that you had worked on.
I can totally relate to you when u say it hurts ur eyes hahaha. True, Melody does looks alot better than Ariel in the sequel, especially the beginning part where Melody was introduced (outside the castle with sabastian) and Ariel just simply look awful, her hair is so wrong!!
and there were also some big mistakes they had made throughout the film, for example there's a scene where Melody has her hair tied up, then suddenly the next scene she is not, then next her hair is tied again? o-0?...hahaha
btw, may I ask is Glen Keane animating Ariel in TLM2? he is such an inspiration to me, it will be a total disappointment if he let those scene of ariel pass to the big screen...=(
